Ubisoft, the well-known video game publisher responsible for hit franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Just Dance, is taking another bold step into blockchain gaming with its latest project, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. This project underscores Ubisoft's commitment to exploring the possibilities of blockchain technology, notwithstanding earlier push backs from the gaming community.

The Reveal of Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles

Last week, Ubisoft announced its new game, Champions Tactics, a tactical RPG for PC built on the Oasys blockchain platform. While the details are currently sparse, the game's teaser trailer hints at a fantasy universe, possibly inspired by traditional tabletop games. The trailer features silhouettes of fantasy characters akin to figurines, suggesting a visually intriguing gaming experience.

Gameplay and Blockchain Integration

The official description invites players to "assemble a team of mythical Champions, engage in thrilling tactical battles against other players, and discover the legends of the dark and mystical world of Grimoria.” The game will be accessible via a specialized desktop application and Ubisoft has promised a "free drop at launch," implying the possible requirement of NFTs or tokens for gameplay but promising to provide these at no cost initially.

Ubisoft's Prior Experiences with Blockchain and NFTs

Ubisoft's involvement in the world of blockchain gaming and NFTs is not new. In 2021, the gaming giant rolled out NFT-based items for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint on the Tezos blockchain, stirring a mixed reaction among players. Despite facing criticism, Ubisoft continued its foray into the Web3 world, recently launching Rabbids characters in The Sandbox, an Ethereum-based metaverse game, and spearheading various NFT initiatives, including a Rabbids-themed one in support of UNICEF.

Industry Interest in Blockchain Gaming

This latest project is Ubisoft’s first collaboration with the Oasys blockchain, which has attracted the attention of other gaming industry behemoths, such as Square Enix, Sega, and Bandai Namco. Ubisoft's continued exploration of blockchain technology reflects a wider trend within the gaming industry. As the reception of Champions Tactics unravels, the success of this venture could provide critical insights into the future of blockchain gaming.
